CHAPTER 9

SHAMAN: 1863 - 1876, UNCEDED INDIAN TERRITORY, TONGUE RIVER

From the day Small Hawk and Chooksi met, they spent most of their time running together.

Their feet traveled every pathway across their territory in summer; and in winter, while Chooksi slept the deep sleep of hibernation with her mother, they traveled together in flying dreams.

They grew together as spirit walkers in this way, learning every tree and trail until every sense was filled with a knowledge of the waterways and the creatures and the stones across their territory.
