Chapter 5

RÚN - Vancouver, October 2015

“Let’s take them in order,” said Patrick. “We’ll start with the one on your great grandmother, Catherine. The Shelley curse.”

Kate stared at her journal for a moment, and then opened it to the page she’d marked for the first of the three curses that Patrick claimed were plaguing their family.

This conversation, she knew, was more than a little crazy. But she’d been hearing the voice of her long-dead great-grandfather for years. And now that she was paying attention, he wasn’t holding back.

“Okay,” she said. “I’m ready.”

“Right. Well, even as a child, Cat’s temper was something of a marvel. I met her when I was 13 and she was only five years old. It was 1853, and her family was just off the boat. They were running from the famine that had killed all their people.”
