CHAPTER 6

SOLDIER: FORT KEOGH, MAY 1879

“You cannot look away,” Cian warned Patrick. “Pay attention. See everything there is to be seen.”

Unable to respond, Patrick felt himself expand into the enormity of his much larger ancestor, felt the weight of the great horns on his head, smelled the smoke and the reek of an ancient lifetime spent in woods and fens and bogs, and then he closed his eyes to an explosion of light and movement.

Cian whirled Patrick through a barrage of landscapes, not in ancient Ireland, but in this land.

He saw many moments in the life of the man sitting in front of him: as a young boy playing with a large grizzly bear; laughing with his mother; running through snow with his people in the winter dark as soldiers hunted them.

And then: “This happened under the Flower Moon just a few days ago,” whispered Cian as the whirling stopped.
